Postponed!!
Our apologies to those planning to attend our October meetup, we’ve decided to postpone it until we can get a date/place where more members are available to attend.
We’re going to post a survey here to get some preferences from the group. Watch for an upcoming email to the meetup group for more information.

We will have two topics for this months meet-up in keeping with our Blogger and Developer Streams. The topics are:
Blogging Stream:
Top 10 Tips for Blogging with WordPress – Presenter – David Cook
Get a head start on your own blog (or take it to the next level) by learning the top 10 tips, which are specifically geared toward anyone running on or planning to launch a site on the self-hosted WordPress.org platform.
Developer Stream:
An upgrade safe technique to add functions to your blog – Presenter – Rick Radko
When you want to add functionality to your WordPress blog with a code snippet from the web, where should you paste it? The source sites say “Just paste this code in your functions.php”, but themes installed from wordpress.org are now part of the update system. When they update, they will overwrite your functions.php and you will lose your code!
This talk will show you how to easily create your own personal upgrade safe places to save your code snippets and theme changes. This presentation is geared towards everyone who uses WordPress.

Ottawa WordPress Meetup, September 21, 2011
This will be the first Meet-up for our group.

The thinking for the group and our meet-ups is to have one meet-up per month.
During the meet-up we will discuss two topics: a blogging or non-code topic and a developer topic. Presentations will be approx 45 max in length and we will have a 10 min break in between. Networking is encouraged throughout.
For this first meet-up the agenda will consist of the following:
- Introduction & Welcome
- Talk about events: Blog-a-thon (fall 2011 event) and Hack-a-thon (spring 2012 event)
- Talk about an Ottawa WordCamp – End Summer 2012
- Presentation by Dave Adams (see Dave’s bio at this link )
Topic: “Maintaining a Healthy WordPress Site”
Description: “It is one thing to install and build a WordPress site, but it is another thing to keep it running. This presentation discusses tips on the care and nurturing of a single entity WP site”
- Networking, networking and more networking

Do you want to learn about WordPress? Do you have a WordPress blog or site, or use WordPress at work? Would you like to talk to others about WordPress? Do you need to know more about how to run your site?
Attend our next meeting, and meet other WordPress users, learn more about WordPress, learn best practices, share ideas, projects and other information.
We have 2 meeting streams. The main stream, meeting the first Wednesday of most months, includes beginner WordPress topics and general topics like SEO. The “Not Beginner” track, on the third Wednesday of select months, is comprised of talks that don’t fit in the main stream. This track will cover things in more depth, and some knowledge of WordPress will be expected.
