Make your stylesheets sassy: Getting started with Sass
Sass is a CSS preprocessor that you can use to make your stylesheets faster, more succinct and actually enjoyable to write. Sass stands for “Syntactically Awesome Style Sheets” (no joke) and this presentation is for developers who are new to Sass and looking to get started with their first .scss files (the ‘S’ stands for “sassy”).
Nathan will be covering how you can get your workflow ready for Sass, using the Scss syntax, and his recommended structure for your .scss files. Additionally, Nathan will discuss how you can implement popular frameworks like Bootstrap and Foundation using Sass while avoiding the bloat of hundreds of lines of styles you have no intention of using. Finally, Nathan will show developers how to integrate their stylesheets into their project using WordPress’ recommended way via the functions.php file.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop with them. You will benefit from installing a prepossessing application before-hand such as Prepos (Windows and Mac), Cactus (Mac), or CodeKit (Mac) all of which have free trial versions. Using these applications will get you up and running with Sass instantly along with other benefits which will be discussed during the talk.
Presented by Nathan Ferguson. Nathan is an Ottawa web developer who builds client sites predominantly with the WordPress platform. Nathan’s focus is on front-end development and is eager to share what he’s learned with the WordPress community.

Anyone at any experience level is welcome to attend, but there will be an assumption in the presentations and discussion that attendees have some knowledge of WordPress.

Getting started with WordPress development
Ready to start customizing WordPress but aren’t quite sure where to start? This presentation will help get you going in the right direction by showing you some tools, talking about some Gotcha’s and providing an introduction to some code.
Presented by: Ryan Welcher, a web developer with over 10 years experience working for Mediaplus Advertising here in Ottawa.

Google Analytics and WordPress for Beginners
Google Analytics produces thousands of different numbers, metrics and statistics. There’s so many numbers it can be more confusing than enlightening trying to figure out which ratios should be taken into account, which stats are the most important.
This session is a beginner’s guide to best practice set up of Google Analytics and navigating the user interface so you can look at your traffic more critically. We’ll also talk about how Google Analytics WordPress plugins simplify your set-up and analysis.

Backing up your WordPress website
Could you recover your WordPress website if it was lost due to a hardware failure, hacked, or corrupted during an update or plugin install? Having reliable automated backups can make the difference between taking 10 minutes to restore your site, and needing to do a complete site rebuild that may take a week or more. This presentation will look at the many options and plugins for backing up your WordPress site including backing up to Amazon S3.
